Anonymous people counters, accurate tools for commercial real estate management
What are people counters?
People counters are electronic sensors that count how many people are in a given space at a given time. Typically, this is done by counting the number of people who enter and leave a room. People counters in entrances and exits allow building managers to count the number of people entering and exiting, thus enabling them to keep a running total of room occupancy.
One application of people counters is to help business owners answer the question of whether they are paying for more space than they need. With people counters installed in doorways, business owners can rapidly quantify and assess whether their premises are being used efficiently and can take steps to manage their space more effectively.
How do people counters help commercial real estate managers?
Commercial space is expensive and therefore it’s important to have insights into occupancy levels and visitor numbers. The cost of a business’ physical premises, including rent or mortgage payments, property tax and so on, can quickly add up.
Terabee people counters provide immediate access to valuable anonymous room and space occupancy data, which businesses can use to make more informed decisions.
From identifying under- or over-utilized space, automating HVAC and lighting in response to room occupancy, the data provided by people counters can be used in a number of ways to improve commercial real estate productivity and reduce business running costs.
These Terabee people counters or footfall monitoring devices use Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology, which means that they gather no personal identifiable information (PII) and they fully respect individual’s privacy.
How does Time-of-Flight technology work?
With Time-of-Flight technology a beam of light is emitted by the sensor, typically in the form of infrared (IR) or laser pulses. Then the time taken for the beam light to travel to an object and back again is measured. As they calculate the time-of-flight of each pulse, ToF sensors create a depth map of the surrounding environment and detect objects within it, including people.
Behind Time-of-Flight technology is a similar principle to that of radar or sonar technology. The key difference is that Time-of-Flight uses light instead of sound or radio waves. So Time-of-Flight sensors are more accurate than other distance measurement technologies. Another benefit for commercial real estate managers is that Terabee Time-of-Flight sensors are less sensitive to low-light conditions, ambient noise and interference, making them suitable for use in a wide range of indoor environments.
Anonymous people counting data
When Time-of-Flight technology is used in commercial buildings for occupancy monitoring or people counting, it works in a completely non-intrusive, anonymous way. Terabee people counting sensors cannot capture any personal data, images or videos of individuals as they don’t use camera technology. Time-of-Flight sensors simply detect presence and movements within a defined area.
Importantly, Terabee ToF sensors do not capture images, which is a key difference from camera-based technologies and a real benefit for commercial real estate management. Terabee people counters gather data related to three points when someone passes into the people counting area: head and both shoulders, nothing more. Terabee people counters don’t measure the height of visitors, nor do they gather any information about gender, physical appearance, clothing or other personal data. All data is fully GDPR compliant which is key in the management of commercial real estate.
People Counting solutions from Terabee
Terabee people counters are designed to be as easy to use as possible. They can be installed indoors above any doorway.
With efficient sensors and no need for external data processing, Terabee people counting sensors provide access to accurate room occupancy data at a fraction of the cost of other systems. Data from our people counters can be transmitted via Power-over-Ethernet or LoRaWAN, to enable easy integration into any network.
